In this article (by God's grace, the faith of Christ, and by the power of the Holy Ghost - Who is Christ's Spirit of Wisdom) I will comment on Christ's response to John's disciples when they asked Him…

"Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?"

(Matthew 11:3; Luke 7:19, 20)

Christ responded to this question in three ways: ††

1)      Christ first spoke with actions.  He performed miracles right before the eyes of John's disciples. (cf. Luke 7:21)  And these weren't just any miracles; these were supernatural miracles from on high that provided clear and visible evidence that Christ was the Messiah. (cf. John 10:25,37-38)  Also the miracles Christ performed before John's disciples were specifically a fulfillment of the prophecies listed in Isaiah 35, which is prophetically both a Messianic and Millennial Chapter. (Televangelist and prophecy expert Dr. Jack Van Impe cites the entire chapter of Isaiah 35 as being "Millennial")  Moreover, Isaiah 35 is only 5 chapters before Isaiah 40; which contains the prophecy about John the Baptist's ministry (Isaiah 40:3; Matthew 3:3; Luke 3:4): an Old Testament verse John the Baptist had certainly been familiar with.

2)      Christ then verbally told John's disciples what He had just done and what He had been doing throughout His ministry (Matthew 11:4,5; Luke 7:22).  What Christ told them He had done was certainly conclusive evidence that the Messiah is here and that He is the Messiah.  Also by mentioning to John's disciples the specific miracles that He had just performed: this was again a reference to Isaiah 35.  Therefore, Christ referred John the Baptist to the Inspired and Preserved Word of God for confirmation, consolation, and to relieve his anxieties.  And again, Christ knew that John would have been familiar with Isaiah Chapter 35 because it is so near to the verse about John the Baptist in Isaiah Chapter 40.

3)      Thirdly, the Word of God, Jesus Christ, dropped the hammer of His Word (cf. Jer. 23:29) when He said…

"And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."

(Matthew 11:6)

"And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."

(Luke 7:23)

Since Christ said "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." (Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33).  The answer He gave to John Baptist's disciples is the same to us today and just as true as it was in the 1st century.  Therefore, we need to rejoice in our Saviour and be glad in Jesus Christ our God.  We are not to be in any wise ashamed of Him or the Gospel (cf. Mark 8:38; Luke 9:26; Rom. 1:16; 2 Tim. 1:8, 12, 2:15; Ps. 119:80; I John 2:28).  Christ is the Rock and Foundation of our religion (Eph. 2:20) and the author and finisher of our faith (cf. Heb. 5:9, 12:2).

Christ also responded to John Baptist by referencing Isaiah Chapter 35 (Matthew 11:5; Luke 7:22; Is. 35:5,6), which is a prophetic chapter concerning the millennial reign.  Therefore Christ linked Himself to the Millennial Reign.  So if we haven't yet entered into the Millennial Kingdom, we still need to be trusting in Jesus!

Now keep in mind that in Christ "…are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." (Col. 2:3).  If there was another deliverer for us to look for He could have wisely told John's disciples, but He didn't because He is the Deliverer and He is the Spirit of Wisdom (The Divinity, Righteousness, Wisdom, and Strength of God are all attributes of Christ Jesus, which in themselves provide more than enough evidence that we need not to look for another, but rather be completely fixated on Him).

After reviewing Christ's response to John's disciples, there is no way that anyone could honestly and soberly suppose that Christ insinuated that we should be looking for another deliverer – rather His response clearly declares that HE IS THE SAVIOUR!  No one else could come close to fulfilling all the Messianic prophecies from the Jewish Old Testament, NO ONE!

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Millennial KING OF THE JEWS.  He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah, and the root of David, and He shall sit upon the throne of His father judging the twelve tribes of Israel for ever!

The details from this account come from the Gospel According to Saint Matthew Chapter 11 and the Gospel According to Saint Luke Chapter 7.

†† Also note that the Lord Jesus Christ gave no indication whatsoever that we should look for another, in fact He implied just the opposite: that the LORD is here.
